How to Recover from an Embarrassing Office Christmas Party

It’s that time of the year again. Everyone’s having social get-togethers with their colleagues – the people they’ve spent most of the year with. What could possibly go wrong?

We’ve all been there. You get a little overwhelmed, a little too relaxed or even drink a bit too much and suddenly you’re the latest topic of office gossip.

The next few days are packed full of second-guessing your decision to breakdance in the karaoke bar, and all too soon – despite considering a resignation, career change and a new life in France – you have to make that dreaded return to work and face the music. Read on for a guide to dealing with your post-party-embarrassment.

Evaluate

The first thing you need to do is think about what you have actually done, calmly. Remember that most people have had the same regrets about, and in most cases it’s over something pretty ordinary. With all the day-to-day frustrations of work firmly built up inside everyone, unguarded comments and disagreements are bound to happen.

Don’t make things worse

Whatever you do, don’t turn up to work the day after the office party looking as though you have just rolled out of bed. However embarrassed you are feeling about your inappropriate outbursts the night before, you’ll draw much more attention to yourself at work if you’ve still got party glitter stuck in your hair.

Make sure you’re as fresh as a daisy. It’s easier said than done if you’re in work the day after a late-night office party. But if you didn’t get much sleep, have plenty of water (or coffee), a big breakfast and a refreshing shower before you make your way into work.

Apologise

Embarrassing dancing is one thing, but if you know you’ve offended or upset someone, be ready to tell them you’re sorry. They’re more likely to hold a grudge if you don’t mention it. And as much as you might want to avoid them, you’re going to see them at some point. The quicker you tell them, the sooner they can wipe the slate clean.

Learn to laugh

At some point, somebody is going to mention what has happened. And – as long as it isn’t too serious – learn to laugh about it. If you react badly, it will make the situation far more awkward for everyone – including yourself. Laugh it off, and over time your laugh might even become a bit more genuine.

Think of the positives

Hey – it’s not all doom and gloom. Sometimes Christmas parties are a great way to come out of your shell.
